Unknown gunmen have killed a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer who was attached to the Ooni of Ife Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi on Sunday night.

The NSCDC operative, Marcus, had gone to the entrance of Ooni’s private residence after buying a recharge card when his assailants shot him.

According to local residents, the hoodlums did not attack the residence nor attempted to rob the occupants, but the officer’s rifle was stolen and subsequently left the scene.

Reports say the deceased officer colleagues rushed out on hearing the sound of gunfire but the assailants hurriedly left the place before they came out.

Marcus was rushed to hospital where he died.

The gunmen are believe to be members of an armed robbery gang who attacked Marcus because he was seen standing alone.

NSCDC spokesman Mr. Wale Folarin confirmed that his comrade was murdered.

“It is true that one of our officers attached to the Ooni’s palace was shot dead by some unidentified persons,” he said.

“He was shot in front of a private residence of the Ooni.

“His killers went away with his gun and he died at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, in Ile Ife.”

Folarin said that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing and the police are still investigating.

According to him, every security operative in the state is working to arrest the perpetrators of the crime.

He added that every single gangster responsible for the crime will face justice.
