Senate receives letter for the corrected version of 2016 budget from the presidency

The Senate has received a letter from President Buhari, stating that some corrections were made to the 2016 budget presented to it on December 22nd. The letter which was read before the house by Senate President Bukola Saraki this morning reads in parts. “It will be recalled that on Tuesday, 22 December, 2015, I presented my 2016 budget proposals to the joint sitting of the national assembly. I submitted a draft bill accompanied by a schedule of details. At the time of submission, we indicated that because the details had just been produced, we would have had to check to ensure that there were no errors in the detailed breakdown contained in the schedule. That has since been completed and I understand that the corrections have been submitted. The national assembly would therefore have the details as submitted on the 22nd and a copy containing the corrections submitted last week. It appears that this has led to some confusion. Newspaper review: 55 Nigerians stole N1.34 trn in 8 years – Min. of Information

Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed while addressing a world press conference in Abuja yesterday to mark the beginning of the war against corruption in Nigeria said that 55 Nigerians stole a combined amount of N1.34 trillion between 2006 and 2013. The minister said 15 former Governors stole N146.84 billion; four former ministers stole N7 billion; 12 former public officers both at Federal and State levels stole over N14 billion; eight Nigerians in the banking sector - N524 billion , while 11 businessmen stole N653 billion. Lai said that, using World Bank rates and costs, one-third of the stolen funds could have provided 635.18 kilometres of roads; 36 ultra-modern hospitals per state; 183 schools; educated 3,974 children from primary to tertiary level at 25.24 million per child and built 20,062 units of 2-bedroom houses. Celin Dion's brother, Daniel Dion dies of cancer

Daniel Dion, the brother of Quebec born singer, Celine Dion, died at the age of 59 on Saturday, January 16 after a battle with cancer. Statement from Dion family said the eighth of 14 children born to Thérèse Tanguay-Dion and Adhémar Dion, Daniel Dion spent his final days at Maison Adhémar-Dion, a palliative care center in Terrebonne Quebec, Canada. He leaves behind two adult daughters, two grandchildren and an extended family of nieces and nephews. His funeral will take place later this month at St-Simon-et-Jude in Quebec, where the Dion children were raised. Daniel Dion, brother of singer Celine Dion. "Taking in consideration the reserved character of their deceased brother, the family wishes respect and discretion from the media," the family said. Meanwhile, the information gets to Celine Dion as she prepares for her husband funeral, René Angélil, who died on Thursday at age 73 after a long fight with throat cancer.
