The theme of this year's celebration is: Motivating the Nigerian Armed Forces for Effective Service Delivery. Senate President, Bukola Saraki represented President Buhari at the service.

Over 40 death have been recorded of Lassa Fever outbreak

The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, has revealed that over 40 deaths have been recorded in Nigeria since the outbreak of the deadly viral disease, Lassa Fever. Adewole said at a press conference in Abuja today, that the viral disease which is spread by infected rodents, has spread to ten states in the last six weeks when the first case was reported in November. “In the last six weeks Nigeria has been experiencing Lassa fever outbreak which so far has affected 10 states in the country. The states affected include Bauchi, Nasarawa, Niger, Taraba, Kano, Rivers, Edo, Plateau, Gombe and Oyo state. The total number so far reported is 86 and 40 deaths with the mortality rate of 45%. Our laboratories have confirmed 22 cases so far, indicative of a new round trip of Lassa fever outbreak,” he said.

Giant statue of former Chinese leader Mao Zedong demolished

A gigantic gold-painted statue of Communist China's founding father Mao Zedong has suddenly been demolished, apparently for lacking government approval, state media said today, January 8th. The Image of the statue of a seated Mao towering 37 metres (121 feet) over empty fields in the central province of Henan was made viral before its demolition. The reason the three million yuan ($460,000) structure destroyed was "unclear" said the People's Net news portal cited local officials. Also, it cited reports from unspecified media as saying the likeness of the man who ruled China with an iron grip for nearly three decades until his death in 1976 "was not registered or approved" by the country's local government. According to @afunzo who shared some photos of Delta Mall after attack on twitter, the Delta Mall at Effurun Roundabout, Delta state was attacked by restive youths this morning. A mobile police officer said to be working at the mall allegedly harassed a notorious youth leader named Barrow in the community. The youths got annoyed and besieged the mall, pursuing the security officers and then started attacking the shops. See photos after the attack

54-year-old woman gives birth to her grandchild

Tracey Thompson from North Texas has given birth to her own granddaughter after serving as a surrogate for her daughter, Kelley McKissack, 28. The 54-year-old delivered a 6-pound 11-ounce girl at The Medical Center of Plano. Doctors at the hospital say McKissack and her husband, Aaron McKissack, had undergone multiple infertility treatments only to suffer three miscarriages. According to a hospital statement released on Thursday, the Wylie, Texas, couple had four fertilized embryos left, so Tracey Thompson offered to be a surrogate, despite being seven years past menopause. The embryos were implanted in Thompson's womb last April. The McKissacks named the child Kelcey, a combination of the mother's and grandmother's names. Grandmother and child are doing well.

Also, Honourable Ras Baraka was appointed as the Mayor of the City of Newark, NJ. Hon. Ugochukwu Nwaokoro as Deputy Mayor; and Evans Anyanwu, Esq. as Chief Prosecutor of the city.
