(Photo: Getty image) Regardless its detailed ringing name, “broken-heart syndrome” is in fact a real disease and now researchers have found evidence that it’s connected to the second leading cause of death worldwide: cancer. According to research, in 1990, scientists in Japan first recognised Takotsubo syndrome (TTS), and causes symptoms such as sudden chest pain, short of breath and low blood pressure. The Harvard Medical School describes it as a sudden “weakening of the left ventricle, the heart's main pumping chamber.” The condition has long been connected to an emotionally traumatizing events, which can also trigger mental illness. Research states that one in six of patients with TTS had cancer and, perhaps relatedly, were far less likely to survive for five years after it occurred. The most common cancer among participants, 87 percent of whom were women — was breast, but included cancers affecting other parts of the body, such as the skin and gastrointestinal system....

Final year student of UNN stabbed to death in his residence

A First class final year student of University of Nigeria, Nsukka was on Wednesday, stabbed to death by another student over non-payment of electricity bill at his residence, Alfred Lodge in Nsukka. The student known as Mbah Chuks Stephen, who had less than two months to graduate from the Department of Public Administration and Local Government (PALG), got into a fight with his lodge president simply identified as Asogwa Nnamdi, over issues around payment of electricity bill. Reports states that, Nnamdi, a second year student of the Department of Combined Arts (English/Theatre and Film studies) disconnected the deceased’s electricity line following his alleged refusal to pay a fine of N200 as agreed by the residents of the lodge. Helen Okereke, a resident of the lodge described the incident as “unusual, unexpected and a brief moment of anger,” which ended up destroying a lot of things, adding that the deceased first attacked the Nnamdi with a stone which prompted the retaliato...

Plane carrying 113 passengers and crew crashes in Cuba

A Boeing 737 plane crashed moments after taking off from Havana's Jose Marti International Airport, today killing over 100 of its 113 passengers and crew barely 24 hours after more than a third of its fleet were grounded over safety concerns. Cuba's newly sworn in president Miguel Diaz-Canel confirmed there was a 'high number of casualties' after the internal Cubana de Aviacion flight crashed into a yuca field near a high school, in the Santiago de las Vegas neighborhood. Just three survivors have been recovered so far - all in critical condition, according to Cuban media. Photos of the scene show fire crews attempting to put out the still smoking wreckage of the aircraft which was devastated in the crash. Remains was left scattered across the surrounding area after the explosion.
