Man United midfielder to hang up his boots and become a coach

Michael Carrick is ready to retire as a player to take up a coaching role.

The player is set to call time on an illustrious career at Old Trafford at the end of the season and unlike so many before him, he will not be having much time to rest
The 36-year-old explained how it was a 'no-brainer' to take up Mourinho's offer. He hardly had to think when Jose Mourinho offered him a coaching role at Manchester United.

'I didn't even have to think about it,' Micheal Carrick said. 'It was a total no-brainer. Working with Jose. I'm genuinely looking around and thinking "not many lads would get that opportunity so quick".

'It's an unbelievable opportunity to learn off somebody like Jose who has been everywhere and won everywhere. He's got something very special. He's a winner. He's got that drive to succeed.'

Carrick's playing days have long seemed over for him. He has played only four times this season, his last appearance against Huddersfield in February in the FA Cup - and remain a lengthy story on the side-lines suffering from an irregular heartbeat.

This season's European final on May 26 will mark 10 years since Carrick lifted the trophy with United. During his 12-year spell at United he has also won five Premier League's, three league cups, an FA Cup and the Europa League.
