Senator Ben Bruce reacts to the banning of Codeine

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce
Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, representing Bayelsa East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, says Nigeria should ban “bad governance instead of codeine”.

The Bayelsa East lawmaker who made this comment on Twitter on Wednesday, noted that “bad governance makes young people so desperate that they have nothing to look forward to in life”.
Senator Bruce’s statement is coming two days after the Federal Ministry of Health directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to ban with immediate effect further issuance of permits for the importation of Codeine as an active pharmaceutical ingredient for cough preparations.

The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole made this known in his office in Abuja on Tuesday, May 1, 2018.

Professor Adewole said the directive became necessary due to the great abuse of Codeine usage has been subjected to in the country.
In its stead, Professor Adewole said Codeine-containing cough syrups should be replaced with dextromethorphan which is less addictive.

Following the development, the Senator reacted on his Twitter handle @benmurraybruce, that “Instead of banning codeine, Nigeria should ban the bad governance that makes young people so desperate that they have nothing to look forward to in life”.
